Our Story: A Passion for Choral Music
The Phoenix Singers were born from a shared love for choral music. Founded in 2014 by Sally Ross in the heart of Oxfordshire, our journey began under the expert guidance of David Iles, a renowned musician and educator who continues to teach and run Warwickshire Young Voices. With David at the helm, we embarked on our first performances, enchanting audiences with two carol concerts and a memorable “Voices of Light” concert featuring highlights from Haydn’s Creation and works by Gjeilo, Lauridsen, and Tallis.
In 2016, we were honoured to come under the wings of Justin Lavender – a world-renowned tenor who had latterly moved towards vocal coaching and conducting. Having moved to the area, he agreed to take over the baton from David, and we found ourselves lucky enough to be singing under the vocal coach for the men at King’s College, Cambridge and a Professor of Vocal Studies at The Royal College of Music! Justin brought his exceptional talent and experience to The Phoenix Singers, shaping our sound and inspiring us to reach new heights.
Today, our choir comprises around 20 passionate singers from across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Northamptonshire. We’re a diverse group, united by our love for choral chamber music. From busy rehearsals to captivating concerts, we embrace a challenging and rewarding repertoire, spanning Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary gems.
Creating Unforgettable Experiences
We’ve built strong connections with our local audiences, sharing our love for both classic and contemporary choral works through thoughtfully curated programs. And during the festive season, we bring holiday cheer with enchanting Christmas concerts led by our talented Musical Director, Peter McMullin.
